Job Title: ASL Communication Facilitator (IRIS Program Participant-Directed Role)

We collaborate with clients, caregivers, and healthcare teams to ensure equitable access to communication and meaningful support through Wisconsin’s IRIS (Include, Respect, I Self-Direct) program.
Your Impact:
Become a pivotal communication bridge for a deaf individual with developmental disabilities and transform lives through your efforts. In this participant-directed IRIS program role, you will empower their voice, advocate for their needs, and facilitate connections with their caregivers, medical team, and community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate Communication: Provide precise two-way American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation between the client and caregivers/medical professionals.
- Advocate for Expression: Assist the client in confidently articulating their needs and preferences to support staff and healthcare providers.
- Simplify Complex Information: Translate medical discussions and daily interactions into accessible ASL.
- Promote Inclusion: Foster environments where the client’s voice is prioritized.
- Collaborate Effectively: Align communication strategies with multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications:
- Native-Level ASL Fluency.
- Relevant Experience: Supporting individuals with hearing impairments + developmental disabilities.
- Compliance: Must pass Wisconsin DHS-required caregiver background checks (per DHS 12), including:
- WI Caregiver Background Check.
- Registry reviews (Neglect, Abuse, Misappropriation).
- Mandatory reporting clearance.
- Interpersonal Skills: Patience, empathy, and exceptional active listening.
- Team-Oriented Approach: Proven collaboration skills for client-centered outcomes.
Compensation:
$25–$30/hour.
